How to make a URL slug from a title
- Paste your title.
- Pick a separator (hyphen is standard) and decide on stop words and max length.
- Copy the slug.
Clean URLs from messy headlines
Turn a headline like "10 Best Developer Tools for 2026! π" into something clean like 10-best-developer-tools-2026. It strips the punctuation and emoji, and can drop filler words like "the", "for" and "and" too.
There are two more tabs for other URL jobs. One encodes or decodes URL components. The other breaks a full URL into its protocol, host, path and query parameters, which makes it much easier to read a long tracking link.
Frequently asked questions
Hyphens or underscores?
Hyphens. Google treats a hyphen as a space between words, but it reads an underscore as joining them, so my_blog_post is read as one long word.
Should I remove stop words?
Usually, yes. Shorter slugs are easier to read and share. But check the result still makes sense. Sometimes dropping "not" or "to" changes the meaning.
How long should a slug be?
There's no hard rule. Three to six words is a sensible range. Long enough to say what the page is about, short enough to not get cut off in search results.
